This spring, the United States has faced an unusually severe series of tornadic outbreaks, leaving many communities grappling with the aftermath. As these weather events become more frequent and intense, residents and communities must take proactive steps to ensure their safety. One effective solution that has emerged to combat the 2024 tornado outbreaks is the storm shelters offered by companies like Forever Safe Shelters. Read on to take a look at the 2024 tornado outbreaks and what we can do to stay safe.

The Reality of Tornadoes in the U.S.

Tornado Alley, a region that typically includes parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota, is infamous for its frequent and intense tornado activity. The unique geographical and meteorological conditions of the Great Plains—flat terrain, the presence of the Rocky Mountains to the west, and the mixture of cold, dry air from Canada with warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico—create an ideal breeding ground for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

The Southern states are also no strangers to tornadoes. However, the 2024 season has been fierce. States like Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Florida saw multiple strong tornadoes that resulted in significant damage to infrastructure and homes, and, sadly, loss of life.

January 8-10

Between January 8 and 10, a significant tornado outbreak affected eight states, including Alabama, Texas, and Louisiana, resulting in a total of 39 tornadoes. According to the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), the composition of this outbreak varied widely in intensity, featuring several EF-Us, 13 EF-0s, 15 EF-1s, six EF-2s, and one EF-3 tornado, with the strongest storm reaching wind speeds of up to 140 mph. These 2024 tornado outbreaks showcased a broad spectrum of severe weather phenomena, impacting countless communities across the region with its destructive force.

March 14-15

In Ohio, a series of storms left over 20,000 homes without power. Nine tornadoes struck, with three confirmed deaths and at least 28 injuries. The tornadoes ranged from EF-0 to EF-3. The governor declared a state of emergency on March 17th.

April 27-28

On April 27 and 28, severe weather swept across the Midwest and Central Plains, unleashing a series of 17 tornadoes in Oklahoma alone. This catastrophic event led to the declaration of a state of emergency in 12 counties within the state. The tornadoes, part of a larger storm system that generated over 200 twisters across the region, were responsible for at least five fatalities and over 100 injuries.

Record Breakers

As of April 2, 2024, Ohio experienced an unprecedented number of tornadoes, recording 22 twisters in just the first three months of the year. This surpasses the previous record of 12 tornadoes, which was set in 1986.

 Understanding the Impact

The recent tornadic events have highlighted several vulnerabilities in our communities:

  • Housing Structures: Many homes are not built to withstand the powerful winds of a tornado.
  • Warning Times: While meteorological science has significantly advanced, tornadoes can still form quickly, leaving little time for effective response.
  • Community Preparedness: Not all communities have equal access to storm shelters or emergency plans.

In light of these challenges, it becomes clear that more robust measures are needed to protect lives and property.

The Role of Forever Safe Shelters in the 2024 Tornado Outbreaks

This is where Forever Safe Shelters steps in. Specializing in add-on in-home or business storm shelters, Forever Safe provides solutions tailored to the unique needs of those living in tornado-prone regions.

Features of Forever Safe Shelters

1. Durability: Our shelters are meticulously constructed using welded panels securely anchored to a robust concrete slab. Each wall panel is crafted from a 4-inch steel channel, forming a sturdy rectangular unit with a #4 rebar system welded inside. We then reinforce it further with high-strength concrete, allowing it to cure for a period of 30 days before installation. Similarly, the roof panels are fabricated with a higher strength 4-inch channel system, incorporating a #5 rebar system for added durability. The entire unit can be securely anchored to your slab. With each shelter weighing approximately 600 pounds per lineal foot, you can trust in the resilience and strength of our construction.

2. Accessibility: Understanding that quick access is crucial, Forever Safe Shelters can be installed within your home. This accessibility is vital during sudden tornado alerts.

3. Comfort and Capacity: Openings for ventilation are integrated into the walls, while provisions for HVAC systems are present in the roof panels. A sleeve for electrical conduit can be installed for added convenience. Sizes vary to accommodate different family needs, from 8’8″ wide x 8’0″ long to 8’8″ wide x 16’0″ long or in any other 4’0″ wide additional increments necessary to meet your needs.

 4. Certification: All shelters meet or exceed FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), and they survive rigorous testing by the Civil Engineer Department at Texas A&M University
